Top 15 Things to Do in Ohrid for First-Time Visitors

Dear travelers,

So—you’re thinking about Ohrid? Yes, go. Just go. You arrive expecting a small lakeside town—and you leave wondering why you didn’t stay longer. There’s history layered into every stone, views that make you pause mid-step, and the kind of peaceful atmosphere that makes your brain actually go quiet for once.

Lake Ohrid is one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, stretching about 30 kilometers long and it’s shared between Macedonia and Albania.

If you’re planning your first trip, here are the 15 things I think you really shouldn’t miss, plus a 3-day itinerary that combines history, nature, food, and just enough downtime for lakeside lounging and lazy coffee breaks.

1. Start in Ohrid’s Old Town (and yes, get the pearls)

Drop your bags and go straight to the Old Town. You’ll pass pearl shops (yes, Ohrid pearls are a thing), small churches, and wooden balconies that look like they’ve been quietly observing the world for a few centuries.

Tip: Grab a coffee at one of the cafes near the lake and just sit. Watch. Listen. It’s the perfect intro to Ohrid’s slow magic.

2. Visit Kukjata na Robevci – The Robevci Family House

The Robevci Family House is an old 19th-century home turned museum that gives you a glimpse into what life looked like for Ohrid’s upper class a couple of centuries ago. It has carved ceilings, antique furniture, lake views from the upstairs windows, and this odd mix of coziness and grandeur.

It’s not big, but it’s layered—with archaeological artifacts downstairs and period rooms upstairs.

3. Climb to Samuel’s Fortress (your legs may hate you, but your eyes will thank you)

You’ll see it up there as soon as you start walking through town—the fortress on the hill, looking dramatic and a little bit like it’s judging you for ordering that second ice cream (it’s not, don’t worry).

The climb isn’t bad—10–15 minutes—but it’s steep. I’d recommend going early or late in the day if it’s summer. Once you’re up there, though… wow. You get a full 360° view over the town, the lake, and the mountains in the distance. The walls are still walkable in sections, and it’s fun imagining this place back when it was full of guards and clanging armor.

Tip: Bring water. Trust me on this one.

4. Visit Plaošnik

This place feels sacred. You walk in and it just feels old, layered, significant. There’s an ancient basilica, ruins, and a rebuilt church dedicated to St. Clement. It’s an active archaeological site and a peaceful place to just slow down and look around.

It also connects nicely if you’re walking from the fortress to Kaneo—which you absolutely should do.

5. See the Church of St. John at Kaneo

Okay, this is the postcard moment: the little church on a cliff, overlooking the lake. You can get there by walking down from Plaošnik or from the lakeside boardwalk.

If you only have time for one photo, make it here.

6. Visit the Church of Saint Sophia

The Church of Saint Sophia isn’t just another old church—it’s the heart of medieval Ohrid. It’s one of the best-preserved Byzantine churches in the Balkans.

Step inside and you’re surrounded by centuries-old frescoes. The acoustics are unreal (they actually host concerts here).

7. Take a Boat Ride on Lake Ohrid

Floating past the cliffs near Kaneo, sun on your face, breeze in your hair—it’s just bliss.

You can grab a short 30-minute ride or go full-day to St. Naum. Either way, it gives you a new perspective of the town.

8. Visit the Bay of Bones

A museum on stilts over the lake? Yes, please. The Bay of Bones is a reconstructed Bronze Age pile-dwelling settlement. It’s fun, interactive, and a great quick stop on your way to St. Naum or Trpejca. The setting is also wildly photogenic.

9. Drive (or Hike) Up to the Galicica Viewpoint

This one’s for the view-chasers. You climb and climb, and then suddenly you’re standing between Lake Ohrid on one side and Lake Prespa on the other.

There are trails if you’re into hiking, but even the drive is worth it. Bring snacks, water, and a jacket—the wind can surprise you.

10. Spend the Afternoon in Trpejca

Tiny village. Big heart. Clear water. Delicious fish.

Trpejca is perfect for your lazy afternoon. You swim, sunbathe, then eat grilled fish so fresh it probably winks at you. There’s not a lot to “do” here, and that’s exactly why you come.

11. Try the Fish Chorba (and Eat All the Fish, Actually)

Something you absolutely need to try in Ohrid is the fish chorba — a warm, lemony, herby soup.

And don’t miss out on grilled Ohrid trout, and a glass of local white wine to perfectly complement your meal.

12. Visit St. Naum Monastery — Where History Meets Serenity

Just a short boat ride or drive from Ohrid, St. Naum is a peaceful spot that feels like stepping into a different time. The monastery itself is beautifully preserved, with vibrant frescoes and an aura of calm that makes it perfect for a slow wander. But the real magic? The crystal-clear springs nearby where you can watch trout swimming right beneath your feet.

Plus, the lakeside views here are some of the most breathtaking around. Definitely a must-visit.

13. Relax at the Beaches

The best beaches aren’t right in the town center, so to find quiet spots and crystal-clear water, you’ll want to hop on a bus or rent a car to explore a bit further out.

Whether it’s the party vibes of Gradishte, the quiet of Labino, or the pebbly charm of Potpeš, you’ll find your perfect beach mood.

Pack water shoes. The pebbles are not messing around.

14. Sunset Drinks or Dinner at Hotel Su’s Rooftop

The view? Absolutely stunning. The food and drinks? Just as good.

Whether you’re popping in for a coffee, a sunset cocktail, or a relaxed dinner, this rooftop spot is the perfect way to relax after a day of exploring.
