The first time I visited Bohinj was more than a decade ago. Back then, I was simply traveling through Slovenia, admiring its mountains, lakes, and charming towns without realizing how important this country would eventually become in my life.

Fast forward 11 years.

This summer, I found myself driving back to Lake Bohinj for the first time in over a decade.

A lot had changed since that first visit. I’d moved to Slovenia. Built a life here.

Explored countless corners of the country. Yet as we approached the lake, something felt strangely familiar.

One thing I love about revisiting destinations is discovering new places while reconnecting with old favorites.

Pitstop Bohinj

Our first stop of the day was Pitstop Bohinj. And yes, the name is accurate.

But don’t rush through it. This is the perfect place to grab a coffee and ease into the day.

With mountain views and a relaxed atmosphere, it’s exactly the kind of spot that encourages you to slow down.

Camp Bohinj

Camp Bohinj has become one of the area’s most popular gathering places. Even if you’re not camping, it’s worth stopping by.

The area offers direct access to nature and serves as a great base for exploring the lake.

Kramar Bohinj

For coffee lovers, Kramar is another excellent stop.

Domačija Majerca

If you’re looking for one restaurant recommendation near Lake Bohinj, make it Domačija Majerca.

The menu focuses on local ingredients and modern Slovenian cuisine.

The setting is beautiful. The food is exceptional.

And after a morning spent exploring the lake, it’s exactly the kind of place where you’ll want to linger over lunch.

The Best Things to Do in Lake Bohinj

While relaxing by the lake is perfectly acceptable, there are plenty of activities for travelers who prefer adventure.

Go Swimming

During summer, Lake Bohinj becomes one of Slovenia’s most popular swimming destinations.

The water is refreshing. Sometimes very refreshing.

But on a hot day, few things feel better than jumping into an alpine lake surrounded by mountains.

Rent a Paddleboard or Kayak

One of the best ways to experience Bohinj is from the water itself.

Paddleboarding and kayaking allow you to explore hidden corners of the lake while enjoying incredible views in every direction.

Visit Savica Waterfall

No trip to Bohinj is complete without visiting Savica Waterfall.

This famous waterfall emerges dramatically from the rock face and is one of Slovenia’s most iconic natural attractions.

The walk to the viewpoint involves a climb up several hundred steps.

I’m not going to pretend otherwise. But the waterfall is absolutely worth the effort.

Ride the Vogel Cable Car

If there’s one activity I’d prioritize above all others, it’s Vogel.

The cable car transports visitors high above Lake Bohinj and into the Julian Alps.

The views from the top are spectacular.

On a clear day, you’ll see mountains stretching endlessly into the distance.

Final Thoughts: Why Lake Bohinj Keeps Calling Me Back

After returning to Lake Bohinj for the first time in 11 years, I realized something.

The lake itself isn’t what stayed with me all this time.

It was the feeling. The feeling of slowing down. The feeling of being surrounded by nature. The feeling that, for a little while, life became wonderfully simple.

Bled may be Slovenia’s most famous lake.

And it’s absolutely worth visiting.

But Bohinj offers something different.

Something quieter. Something more personal.

A reminder that not every beautiful place needs a castle, an island, or a postcard-famous landmark.

Sometimes all you need is a lake, a mountain view, and enough time to appreciate both.

And if you’re lucky, Bohinj might steal your heart too.
