Ljubljana’s Best Bites: 3 Bakeries You Can’t Miss

Dear travelers,

One day you stop, take a bite of something random, and go… wait… this is actually really good.

So this is me, writing to you as I would to a friend visiting: If you come to Ljubljana, or if you’re already here and just haven’t paid attention yet, these are 3 bakeries you need to try.

Ljubljana bakeries

1. Brot Pekarna

I’ve passed Brot more times than I can count. It’s one of those places that’s just there, quiet, minimal, almost easy to overlook if you’re not paying attention. And then one day, I walked in.

I got a Danish pastry. €4.50. And listen… I was not emotionally prepared.

You know when something is so good you kind of just stop mid-bite and look around like, is anyone else experiencing this right now? That was me. And the dangerous part? That was just one thing.

Because Brot also has:

  • fresh bread
  • croissants
  • quiche
  • sandwiches

It’s the kind of place you accidentally turn into a routine.

Little note from me:
Go earlier in the day. Not in a “you have to wake up at 7am” way… but don’t show up too late and expect the best stuff to still be there.

2. Hleb’c na Trubarjevi

Okay, now we’re switching moods. If Brot is calm, minimal, almost Paris-coded…
Hleb’c is a little louder, a little more chaotic—in the best way.

And honestly, Trubarjeva as a street already sets the tone. It’s one of my favorite streets in Ljubljana. A bit edgy, a bit alternative, full of personality. You feel like you’re seeing a different side of the city.

Hleb’c fits right into that. I got the focaccia with nduja and dried tomatoes. And wow. Like… actually wow.

  • slightly spicy
  • rich, almost creamy from the nduja
  • balanced with the sweetness of dried tomatoes
  • soft inside, golden outside

It’s not your typical bakery bite. It has personality.

And while I was there, I noticed:

  • muffins
  • banana cake
  • different breads
  • other focaccias
  • random sweets that looked like they rotate often

3. Pekarna Osem

This one is a bit different. Not just because of the pastries, but because of the experience. At Pekarna Osem, you can actually see them baking in the back.

And I didn’t think that would matter that much… until I was standing there, watching everything happen, and suddenly I was way more invested in what I was about to eat.

There’s something about seeing the process that slows you down. I got a pistachio bun.

And I already knew I was going to like it (pistachio never disappoints), but this one was really good:

  • soft, fluffy dough
  • rich pistachio filling
  • not overly sweet (which I always appreciate)

Final Thoughts (from your Ljubljana friend)

These three places? They’re not just “the best bakeries in Ljubljana.” They’re places I’ve actually been to, gone back to, and would take you to if you were visiting me.

So when you’re here—or if you already are—start with these.

And then keep walking.

Because Ljubljana always has one more good bite waiting around the corner.

Truly yours,
