How to Make the Most of Your Time at Rijeka Christmas Market

Dear travelers,

Last year, I had the chance to visit Rijeka for the first time, and it was such a memorable experience. Rijeka is situated along Croatia’s beautiful Adriatic coast, making it a picturesque destination with plenty to offer. It’s also conveniently located just 115 km from Ljubljana, which makes it easily accessible by car. For those without a car, you can also travel by train—tickets cost €9, and the journey takes about 2.5 hours.

While you can explore Rijeka as a standalone trip, it’s also easy to combine it with a visit to Opatija, which is what we decided to do. Check the Opatija’s Christmas guide here. We spent the morning strolling through Opatija’s charming Christmas market and then headed to Rijeka in the afternoon. If you’re planning a similar visit, here’s a guide to all the must-see attractions and experiences in Rijeka!

Rijeka Cathedral Square

The square comes alive with music, festive lights, and market stalls, all set against the stunning backdrop of the historic St. Vitus Cathedral. The cathedral is beautifully lit, creating a stunning backdrop for the market.

Trsat Castle

This hilltop fortress offers panoramic views of the city and is beautifully illuminated during the holiday season. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to visit as it was exceptionally busy, and we couldn’t find available parking nearby. If you plan to go, it’s worth arriving early or considering alternative transportation, such as a taxi or public transit, to avoid the parking challenges.

Trg Riječke rezolucije Square

One of the highlights of the Rijeka Christmas Market is the food. From fritule, the delightful little doughnuts dusted with powdered sugar, to warm kobasice sausages served fresh off the grill, there was no shortage of delicious options. Of course, no Christmas market experience would be complete without mulled wine, or kuhano vino, a warming drink spiced with cinnamon and citrus. For dessert, we couldn’t resist palačinke, Croatian-style crepes filled with Nutella, which added a sweet finish to our food adventure. And the best place to make a break is Trg Riječke rezolucije Square.

Here are some key tips to help you make the most of your trip:

    • Market Dates: The Rijeka Christmas Market typically runs from late November to early January. Check the official dates before you plan.
    • Weather: While Rijeka enjoys a milder climate than many European cities, it’s still chilly. Bundle up in layers and bring gloves.
    • Crowds: Visit early on weekdays to avoid the busiest times, especially at Korzo Promenade.
    • Currency: Croatia uses the Euro. Many stalls accept cards, but it’s good to have cash for smaller purchases.
