Dear travelers,
If there’s one thing I love more than wandering a new city, it’s wandering a new city with food in hand. And Prague? Ohhh, Prague was the perfect place for exactly that. So grab a fork, loosen that waistline, and let me take you through the meals and moments that made Prague one of my favorite city-break bites.
Why Prague is a Foodie’s Paradise
Czech cuisine is built on three magical principles:
- Warm your soul (because winter is real)
- Pair everything with beer (the national treasure)
- Serve portions that encourage afternoon naps (pure hospitality)
There’s nothing pretentious about food in Prague. It’s comfort. It’s flavor. It’s exactly what you want after climbing up to Prague Castle wondering why you thought cardio was a personality trait.
Prague Beer Tasting: Sip Like a Local
Alright, let’s address the beer elephant in the room. Czech beer is elite. It’s not just a drink here, it’s a way of life. Fun fact: Beer is often cheaper than water. (So, staying hydrated? Check!)
What to expect:
- Local breweries around every corner
- Beer menus longer than your to-do list
Tips for Drinking Beer the Czech Way
- Order “pivo” (beer) and you’re golden
- Standard sizes are 0.3L or 0.5L. Go big.
- Don’t chug, Czechs sip and savor
Must-Eat Czech Classic: Goulash in a Bread Bowl
Imagine this: You’re slightly frozen, with red cheeks from walking through Old Town Square. A friendly server places a warm, round loaf of bread in front of you. You think it’s a side dish.
Oh, no. This bread is the bowl. Inside? Tender beef simmered in rich paprika gravy. Outside? The smell of fresh baked bread teasing you with the promise that yes, you can eat your dish after your dish.
Other Czech dishes worth trying:
- Svíčková – Beef sirloin in creamy vegetable sauce with dumplings
- Opečené klobásy – Sausages roasted to perfection (especially from a street vendor)
- Vepřo knedlo zelo – Roast pork + dumplings + sauerkraut = heaven. I got so obsessed with it, that I started preparing it at home.
Street Snacks & Sweets: Trdelník Everywhere You Turn
Let’s talk dessert. Well… dessert or lunch depending on the day.
Meet: Trdelník (aka chimney cake, aka cinnamon-sugar happiness spiral).
You’ll see them everywhere being rolled, grilled, and coated in sugar. The smell alone is a seduction technique.
Toppings you’ll spot around Prague:
- Ice cream stuffed inside
- Nutella dripping down the sides
- Crushed nuts for crunch
- A sprinkle of magic (probably)
Tip: Buy one from a place that’s rolling them fresh.
We may have stopped for trdelník more than once. Look, research is important.
Hidden Gems
Ah yes… the spots that made us return. The “we should branch out… OR we could go back there again” debate. Spoiler: We went back. Twice.
Fat Cat – So Good We Came Back Again
Casual vibes. Big portions. Comfort food that hits.
What we loved:
- Juicy burgers
- Loaded fries
- Beer selections
- Cozy atmosphere that just feels right
It became our unofficial Prague headquarters.
We’d finish a long day and look at each other like:
“Fat Cat?”
“Obviously.”
Practical tip:
They can get busy, go slightly off-peak to snag the best table.
Prague After Sunset: Bars That Make Nightlife Fun
Prague isn’t just a “beer all day” kind of place. It’s also…
- A cocktail culture playground
- A nightlife adventure
- A chance to meet robots (yes, really)
Robotic Bar – Expensive? Yes. Overrated? A Little. Fun? Absolutely.
Imagine a robotic arm making your drink.
Shaking it. Pouring it. Displaying a little attitude.
Is it pricey? Yep.
Is it overrated? Kinda.
Would I take someone there anyway? 100% yes.
Because how many times can you say a robot bartender made you a cocktail?
Bugsy’s – A Hidden Speakeasy Vibe
Bugsy’s was giving:
- Classic cocktails crafted to perfection
- Mood lighting straight from a noir film
- Date night / best-friend-trip chicness
It’s the kind of spot where you whisper secrets and pretend you’re mysterious.
Prague fed my stomach and my soul. Between the bread-bowl goulash, the never-ending beer, and the bars that give you stories for years, this city just gets what travelers want: good food, good fun, good vibes.
Na zdraví!
