The Clumsies Athens: The Bar That Left Me Speechless
The first cocktail bar we visited in Athens was The Clumsies. And unfortunately for every other bar after it… they had a very hard act to follow.
The Clumsies is consistently ranked among the World’s 50 Best Bars, and after spending one evening there, I completely understood why.
Now normally, ordering cocktails is a struggle for me.
I become deeply committed to reading every single ingredient like I’m studying for an exam.
“Do I want something fruity?”
“Something smoky?”
“Something refreshing?”
“Do I suddenly enjoy gin now?”
“Who even am I?”
So instead of spending 25 minutes making a life decision over one drink, we decided to order the tasting menu.
And honestly? Best decision ever.
For around €25, we got four or five smaller cocktails, each completely different. It turned the whole evening into an experience rather than just drinks at a bar.
One cocktail arrived smoky and dramatic.
Another felt light and citrusy.
One somehow tasted like a dessert you’d order in an expensive restaurant.
Every single drink surprised me.
The presentation was beautiful without becoming gimmicky, and every cocktail had a story behind it. You could tell the bartenders genuinely cared about what they were creating.

Baba Au Rum Athens: Creative Cocktails & Endless Choices
The next bar we visited was Baba Au Rum, another legendary spot in Athens’ cocktail scene and another bar recognized internationally for its creativity.
Completely different vibe from The Clumsies. But equally memorable.
The first thing I noticed was the interior. It felt stylish and slightly eclectic, like someone had combined:
- A vintage tropical bar
- A cool art studio
- A hidden speakeasy
- And a place where very fashionable people accidentally end up after midnight
We sat directly at the bar, which I highly recommend doing if you visit.
There’s something hypnotic about watching bartenders work in cocktail bars like this. The speed, precision, shaking, pouring, garnishes flying around dramatically…
And then came the menu.
Which was enormous.
Normally huge cocktail menus stress me out because I immediately panic that I’m making the wrong choice. But Baba Au Rum does something really fun, they take classic cocktails and completely reinvent them.
Cocktails were around €14, which honestly felt very reasonable considering the quality and creativity behind them.
And despite Baba Au Rum being internationally famous, it still felt relaxed and social rather than exclusive or intimidating.

360 Cocktail Bar: The Best Rooftop View of the Acropolis
Not every great drinking experience in Athens happens behind a cocktail bar. Sometimes it happens several floors above the city.
If you’re looking for one of the best views of the Acropolis, head to 360 Cocktail Bar.
Located right on Monastiraki Square, this rooftop bar offers a front-row seat to the Parthenon. And while Athens is beautiful from street level, seeing it from above feels completely different.
The city suddenly looks calmer. Softer. Almost cinematic.
The cocktails were around €14, which felt reasonable considering you’re paying for one of the most iconic views in Athens. The menu has plenty of classic cocktails and refreshing options, but let’s be honest, the view is the real star here.
If you’re planning to visit, I’d recommend booking ahead, especially for weekends and sunset hours. The rooftop is popular for a reason.

Barro Negro Athens: A Mezcal & Tequila Paradise
Now let’s talk about the bar that made me realize I apparently enjoy mezcal now.
Because before visiting Barro Negro, I thought tequila and mezcal were basically the same thing.
Reader, they are not.
Barro Negro is one of the most interesting cocktail bars we visited in Athens and has also received international recognition in the extended World’s 50 Best Bars rankings.
The concept is completely centered around:
- Tequila
- Mezcal
- Agave spirits
And even if you think that doesn’t sound like your thing… trust me. This bar might change your mind.
The atmosphere inside was darker and moodier than the other bars we visited. Very intimate. Very cool. The kind of place where everyone suddenly looks cinematic under low lighting.
Again, we sat at the bar because apparently, I’ve become emotionally attached to watching bartenders shake cocktails now.
Barro Negro was opened by two friends who share a love for agave spirits, and you can really feel that passion throughout the menu.
I ordered a spicy margarita variation.
Spicy.
Smoky.
Fresh.
Dangerously drinkable.
Cocktails here were around €12, making it probably one of the best-value cocktail experiences we had in Athens.
What Is Mezcal? (For Anyone Else Who Was Confused Like Me)
Quick little cocktail education moment.
Because I know I’m not the only person who hears “mezcal” and just nods politely while secretly having no idea what’s happening.
Mezcal is a Mexican spirit made from agave plants.
Tequila is actually a type of mezcal, but not all mezcal is tequila.
(Yes, I also needed a moment.)
The biggest difference is usually the flavor.
Mezcal often has a smoky taste because of the traditional production process, where agave hearts are roasted underground before distillation.
If you already enjoy margaritas, mezcal cocktails are absolutely worth trying.
Especially at Barro Negro.
Final Thoughts
I came to Athens expecting history, beautiful views, and incredible food. And yes, Athens delivered all of that.
But what I didn’t expect was to fall in love with the city’s cocktail culture.
Every bar felt different.
Every menu felt creative.
Every evening turned into an experience rather than just drinks.
Athens might quietly be one of the best cocktail cities in Europe. And I genuinely can’t wait to go back.
