Best Ice Cream in Ljubljana: Places You Need to Try This Summer

Dear travelers,

There are two types of people during summer in Ljubljana. The first ones stop for ice cream because it’s hot. The second ones (me) somehow end up planning their walks around where they can get the next scoop.

The best part? Ljubljana is small enough that you can turn an ordinary afternoon into your own little gelato tour. Walk through the old town, stop by the river, admire the colorful buildings, and reward yourself with another scoop every few streets. If that isn’t the perfect summer plan, I don’t know what is.

Let’s begin with my absolute favorites.

matcha ice cream Ljubljana

Munchies

If you’ve spent any time on Instagram or TikTok recently, you’ve probably seen Munchies.

They’re already known for serving some of the best matcha in Ljubljana, so when they introduced matcha ice cream, I had to try it.

It completely lived up to the hype.

The texture is incredibly creamy and soft, almost like frozen matcha mousse rather than traditional gelato. The flavor is rich without becoming bitter, and thankfully it isn’t overloaded with sugar, meaning you actually taste the matcha.

If you’re already a matcha lover, this is an easy recommendation.

Fetiche

Chocolate lovers should keep this one on their radar.

Fetiche has built a reputation around premium desserts, and their frozen treats reflect that same attention to detail.

Expect rich chocolate flavors and elegant presentation. A secret: try the sesame flavour.

Vigo

If someone asks me where to get ice cream in Ljubljana, Vigo is almost always my first answer.

I’ve been coming here for years.

It sits right in the heart of the Old Town, making it one of those places where locals and tourists naturally cross paths.

One thing I love is that their portions are generous, and for €3.80 you can choose two flavors, which is excellent value considering the location.

On my latest visit I ordered:

  • Tiramisu
  • Siciliano

And then came my favorite part, the melted white chocolate poured over the top.

It’s a tiny detail, but somehow it makes the whole experience feel even more indulgent.

Cacao

You can’t really write about ice cream in Ljubljana without mentioning Cacao.

Located along the Ljubljanica River, it’s one of the city’s most recognizable dessert spots.

While they’re famous for cakes, their gelato is equally popular during warmer months.

The outdoor terrace is also one of the nicest places to sit with friends while watching people stroll along the river.

If you’re visiting Ljubljana for the first time, chances are you’ll pass by Cacao anyway.

Di Matteo

Di Matteo has quietly become one of the strongest competitors in Ljubljana’s ice cream scene.

Their gelato is incredibly smooth, and they aren’t afraid to experiment with flavors that work surprisingly well together.

For €3.80 you also get two flavors.

I tried:

  • Salted Caramel
  • Pistachio with Passion Fruit

It’s creamy without feeling heavy, making it perfect for hot summer afternoons.

If you enjoy trying something slightly different from classic vanilla or chocolate, Di Matteo is definitely worth adding to your list.

Gelateria Romantika

If authentic Italian-style gelato is what you’re after, Romantika is another excellent option.

Their flavors tend to focus on quality ingredients rather than flashy combinations.

Expect rich pistachio, hazelnut, chocolate, and fruit sorbets that taste wonderfully natural.

Sometimes simplicity really wins.

Final Thoughts

One of the things I love most about Ljubljana is that it never feels rushed.

People sit by the river for hours, musicians play in the streets, and there’s always someone enjoying an ice cream while wandering through the old town.

Maybe that’s why ice cream feels like such a big part of summer here.

The good news?

Ljubljana is compact enough that you don’t have to choose just one.

So grab a cone, wander without a plan, find a shady bench by the river, and enjoy one of the sweetest ways to experience the city.

And if you know another amazing ice cream spot in Ljubljana that deserves to be on this list, let me know. I’m always looking for my next favorite scoop.

Truly yours,
