Portorož & Piran: Slovenia’s Coastal Duo You’ll Fall in Love With

Dear travelers,

When people think of Slovenia, they usually think of Lake Bled, Ljubljana’s charming old town, or the Julian Alps. But, I can confidently say that Portorož and Piran deserve a spot on every Slovenia itinerary.

The best part? You don’t need a long weekend or an elaborate travel plan. In just 36 hours, we managed to fit in sea views, cocktails by the beach, fresh seafood, sunset walks, a little swimming (despite the freezing water), and enough good food to make us start planning our next visit before we’d even left.

So if you’re looking for an easy coastal escape, here’s exactly how we spent our time in Portorož and Piran.

Getting to Portorož and Piran

One of the things I love most about the Slovenian coast is how easy it is to reach.

If you’re coming from Ljubljana, the drive takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes, depending on traffic. The route is straightforward and makes for a perfect spontaneous weekend trip.

Don’t have a car? No problem.

There are regular buses connecting Ljubljana and Portorož throughout the day, making the coast accessible even if you’re relying on public transportation. It’s one of the reasons this destination works so well for travelers, students, and anyone wanting a quick getaway without the hassle of renting a car.

A Quick Tip for Visiting Piran

If it’s your first time visiting Piran, there’s one thing you should know. Cars are heavily restricted in the old town.

Instead of driving into the city center, you’ll park at the large garage just outside the town. From there, a shuttle bus takes visitors directly into the heart of Piran.

Honestly, I wish more historic towns handled tourism this way.

Without traffic and parked cars everywhere, the old town feels much more authentic and enjoyable to explore.

Checking Into Remisens Hotel Metropol

For our stay, we chose Remisens Hotel Metropol in Portorož.

The hotel sits above the marina, giving guests a beautiful panoramic view of the Adriatic Sea. From our room, we could see boats drifting in and out of the harbor while the coastline stretched into the distance.

But my favorite part wasn’t the room. It was breakfast.

There’s something about eating breakfast with a sea view that immediately makes you feel like you’re on holiday, even if it’s just a quick weekend trip.

The breakfast selection was generous too, with plenty of options whether you’re craving fresh fruit, pastries, eggs, or a more traditional hotel breakfast.

If you’re planning a stay in Portorož and want a hotel with easy access to both Portorož and Piran, this is definitely worth considering.

First Impressions of Portorož

Portorož feels different from most coastal towns in Slovenia. Where Piran is historic and charming, Portorož is relaxed and modern.

It almost feels like a mini Mediterranean resort town.

One of my favorite things about Portorož is that you don’t need an itinerary.

You can simply walk along the promenade, stop whenever something catches your eye, and enjoy the slower pace.

Cocktails at Alaya

Of course, no coastal getaway is complete without visiting a cute bar.

One place that quickly became a favorite was Alaya.

Located by the sea, Alaya has exactly the kind of atmosphere you hope for when you’re on the coast.

Good music. Comfortable seating. Cocktails.

Whether you’re visiting during the day or stopping by before sunset, it’s worth adding to your itinerary.

Taking a Dip in the Adriatic

Because what’s a beach trip without at least attempting to swim?

The weather was warm enough to convince us it was a great idea. The water disagreed. While we did manage a quick swim, the Adriatic was still absolutely freezing.

Exploring Piran

The next stop was Piran. And if Portorož feels like a modern seaside resort, Piran feels like stepping into another country altogether. Many first-time visitors compare it to Italy, and honestly, it looks like a small Italian coastal town.

The Venetian influence is everywhere. Colorful facades. Narrow stone streets. Historic architecture. Small squares filled with outdoor cafés. Laundry hanging between buildings. The entire town feels like a postcard.

The Best Way to Explore

My advice? Don’t over-plan. Piran is one of those places that rewards wandering.

Some destinations require a strict sightseeing list. Piran is not one of them.

Tartini Square

Eventually, every visitor ends up in Tartini Square.

Named after the famous violinist Giuseppe Tartini, the square serves as the heart of Piran.

It’s surrounded by beautiful historic buildings and offers a perfect place to take a break during your exploration.

Grab a coffee. Sit outside. Watch people go by.

Dinner at Tri Vdove

After a day of exploring, we headed to Tri Vdove for dinner. If you’re looking for a restaurant recommendation in Piran, add this one to your list.

Fresh seafood is the obvious choice when you’re on the coast, and Tri Vdove delivers exactly what you’d hope for.

The atmosphere feels welcoming without being overly formal, making it ideal for a relaxed evening meal. Just good food and a beautiful setting.

Final Thoughts

Portorož and Piran offer two completely different experiences that complement each other perfectly.

Portorož gives you beach bars, sea views, and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. Piran gives you history, character, and some of the most charming streets in Slovenia.

Together, they create the perfect weekend escape.
